Dragon Harper
A Pern novel about a pandemic and a harper apprentice.
Dragon Harper is a science fiction novel co-authored by Anne McCaffrey and her son Todd McCaffrey, part of the Dragonriders of Pern series. Released four decades after the series debuted in 1967, it is the twenty-first installment. It follows the earlier collaborative novels *Dragon's Kin* and *Dragon's Fire*, all featuring the character Kindan as a boy and young man, set roughly five hundred years after the initial landing on Pern (500 AL). These three books were the first mother-son collaborations in the series.
The story takes place just before the third return of Thread (the Third Pass), during a pandemic that endangers human life on Pern—similar to the outbreaks depicted in *Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern* and *Nerilka's Story*, which occurred near the end of the Sixth Pass. Kindan, first introduced in *Dragon's Kin*, is now an apprentice at the Harper Hall. There, he contends with a bully, navigates a forbidden romance, and takes on the role of protector for new female apprentices after the Masterharper lifts the old ban on women becoming harpers. The plot then shifts to an influenza-like plague that threatens the holders, forcing the Weyrs to enforce quarantine to keep their riders healthy for the next Threadfall. The novel also explains the loss of many records from before, during, and after colonization, further weakening the Pernese connection to their off-world origins.
